Types of Crochet Bags: Tote, Crossbody, Granny Square, Flap Bag and Phone Pouch

Crochet bag designs are not just about looks. The shape decides how much the bag carries, how it sits on you and how much yarn and time go into it. These are the types we make most, what each one is good for, and an example from the shop.

Shoulder bag

The everyday choice: a rounded or trapezoid body, one or two straps that sit on the shoulder, room for a phone, wallet, keys and a small water bottle. Dense cotton keeps it from sagging. Our Black Ruffle Bag is a shoulder bag with a full white ruffle along the handle, and the Ocean Starfish Bag is an open-mesh shoulder bag with navy sea appliqués and a jellyfish charm.

Crossbody bag

A smaller body on a long strap, worn across the chest so your hands are free. Best for outings, weddings and travel. The Maroon Scallop Flap Bag closes with a scalloped flap, and the Maroon Granny Square Bag is a crossbody made from six granny squares.

Granny square bag

Granny squares are the classic crochet motif: a flower cluster in the centre, rounds of stitches around it, squares joined edge to edge. They let you mix colours in a way plain stitch cannot. We make them as bags and as the fold-over Granny Square Wallet.

Round or flower bag

A circular body, often shaped like a flower with a petal rim, on a chain or cord strap. Small, playful and light, usually for a phone, cards and lip balm. The Lilac Flower Bag is our round bag, with a white centre and a lilac and white chain-link strap.

Flap bag

A rectangular body with a front flap that folds over the opening, sometimes with a hidden snap. The flap edge is where the detail goes: scallops, a contrast stitch line, a small bow. See the maroon flap bag above.

Phone pouch and sling

A tall narrow pouch, about the size of a phone with a little room for cards, on a thin crossbody strap. The lightest bag you can carry. The Cherry Phone Pouch is white with maroon trim and a cherry charm on a split ring.

Tote and market bag

Bag charms

Almost every bag we make has a charm, and the charms are also sold on their own in the keychains and charms collection: the Lily of the Valley Keychain, the Jellyfish Keychain, the Cherry Bow Charm and the Lilac Rose Charm that matches the flower bag. A charm is the easiest way to make a plain bag yours.
